Missing teeth are a threat to dental health, and to the youthfulness of your entire face. If the tooth was visible when you smiled, talked, laughed, yawned etc., now the gap is visible. But keep in mind too that there is always an invisible gap as well. That is the gap inside the jawbone.
If you have no dental work to fill those gaps, the body will try to fill them:
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root which holds a new porcelain or acrylic tooth. This way of replacing a missing tooth fills both the tooth gap and the root gap. It also means you will not need any bridge or denture, as the restoration is permanent and requires only the care a natural tooth needs.
The implant is typically a titanium cylinder with grooves running horizontally around it. It is positioned in the jawbone where the natural tooth root used to be. The gum around the implant is sutured and while the bone tissue grows in around the implant over a period of several months. The grooves allow the bone cells to enclose the implant and make it a part of the jawbone. Now it will be a strong anchor for your new tooth.
The second step is to expose the top of the implant and attach a small projection to it called an abutment. A couple of weeks are enough for that to heal.
The last step is to attach your new porcelain crown to the abutment. This gives you a sturdy and attractive new tooth, well-matched to your natural teeth. It prevents any premature bone shrinkage and any tooth migration which would create a bad bite.
Many cosmetic dentists are able to insert the porcelain crown, but have to send their patients to an outside specialist to implant the post to which the crown is affixed. At Dr. O'Neil's office, however, our in-house oral surgeon can implant the post, and our anaesthesiologist can offer general anaesthesia, allowing you to sleep peacefully through the procedure. We are pleased to offer sedation dentistry. Most dental procedures can be done with local anesthetic and, if you are anxious, a mild sedative.
With superbly-qualified dentists who are able to give clear answers to your questions and listen to your concerns, Dr. O'Neil's office provides all the necessities for your healthy, beautiful smile.
