Tooth Whitening FAQ's

Q: What are the advantages of professional teeth whitening?
A: Unlike over-the-counter tooth whitening kits, professional tooth whitening is a simple, one-time procedure that will leave your teeth dazzling white. Not only are professional tooth whitening treatments proven to be effective, but they can be completed in much less time.
If you choose to have your teeth whitened in our Tamarac, Florida cosmetic dentistry office, your procedure will be complete in about an hour. During your tooth whitening procedure, you will be able to relax in our comfortable chairs, watch television, or listen to a CD.
Q: How long will my tooth whitening procedure take?
A: The length of your tooth whitening treatment will depend on whether you have it performed in the office, or if you choose to use a take-home tooth whitening kit. If you choose to have an in-office tooth whitening, Dr. O’Neil will use Zoom tooth whitening so that your treatment will be completed in about an hour.
Take-home tooth whitening can be just as effective as Zoom tooth whitening, but it will take a longer amount of time. For take-home tooth whitening, you will be provided with custom tooth trays and tooth whitening gel that you will have to use on your own time. Generally, this type of treatment requires that you wear the trays twice a day for about an hour until you reach the level of whitening you want.
Q: How long do tooth whitening results last?
A: Tooth whitening is not a permanent procedure. Your tooth enamel is porous, and as a result, even after your teeth are whitened, it can be stained from a number of different sources. The best way to prolong the results of your tooth whitening treatment is to avoid excessive exposure to staining agents like tobacco products, wine, coffee, tea, and dark foods. Also, you can schedule routine tooth whitening sessions. Many of our patients choose to have dazzling white teeth for years by scheduling touch-up appointments for the future.
Q: Are over-the-counter tooth whitening kits as effective as professional tooth whitening?
A: No. Not only are over-the-counter tooth whitening kits not nearly as effective as professional tooth whitening, but they can also damage your teeth. Many times, people use tooth whitening kits from the store and are disappointed because their teeth become sensitive. Also, results are not always as uniform as professional tooth whitening. Leaving teeth different shades of white.
Q: Is tooth whitening right for me?
A: Tooth whitening can be performed on nearly anyone who is unsatisfied with the color or shade of his or her teeth. To determine if tooth whitening is right for you and to see how much lighter your teeth can become, contact Dr. O’Neil in Tamarac, Florida to schedule an initial consultation.
