Boca Raton Tooth Bonding

Tooth bonding works well to restore slightly broken, chipped or discolored teeth. It can sometimes be used to eliminate small gaps between teeth and to repair small areas of decay. Many patients choose to replace their old metal fillings that contain mercury with white fillings. White fillings are naturally more comfortable and less sensitive to hot and cold. The beauty is that all of this can be done in just one visit.

The Tooth Bonding Procedure

First, the tooth is prepared to receive the bonding. If the bonding is being used as a filling, the cavity is drilled out to provide a regular void that can be predictably filled. If bonding is being used to reshape a tooth or fill a chip, the surface of the tooth may be roughened slightly to increase the adherence of the bonding to the enamel.

Tooth bonding is a high-performance plastic that begins as a malleable putty. The putty is mixed and color-matched to your teeth so that it will not be noticeable. It is often advisable to have tooth whitening before having tooth bonding, so the bonding can be matched to your tooth's whitest shade.

Then the bonding is fitted into the void or applied to the enamel surface. If the bonding is being used in a cosmetic application, you will be given an opportunity to evaluate the shape and color matching. Once you and Dr. O'Neil are satisfied with the shape or fill of the bonding, a curing light is applied to the bonding, which stimulates a chemical change, transforming the bonding from a soft malleable putty into a hard plastic.

In addition to being a simple, quick procedure, tooth bonding is a relatively inexpensive treatment option for many cosmetic and general dentistry applications. Not as durable or as attractive as porcelain veneers, tooth bonding is still a long-lasting solution to chipped or cracked teeth.
